Let’s start by taking the shame out of the word. Stimming — short for self-stimulating behavior — is repetitive movement, sound, or sensory input that a nervous system uses to regulate itself. Hand-flapping, rocking, pacing, finger-tapping, humming, repeating a favorite phrase, bouncing a leg, twirling hair, clicking a pen. If you’ve ever done any of these to calm down, focus, or handle a big feeling, you already know what it does from the inside.

Everybody stims a little. Autistic and ADHD people tend to stim more, more visibly, and more essentially — because for us it’s not a nervous tic to suppress, it’s load-bearing self-regulation. And that difference is the whole story.

What stimming actually does

Think of stimming as your nervous system’s thermostat. When input gets too high — too loud, too bright, too much emotion, too much overwhelm — a stim can bleed off the excess and bring the system back toward baseline. When input gets too low — understimulated, bored, foggy, struggling to focus — a stim can top things up and get you back to functional. Same tool, both directions, always in service of regulation.

It shows up across a huge range:

  • Movement: rocking, flapping, pacing, bouncing, spinning.
  • Sound: humming, repeating words or phrases, making the same satisfying noise.
  • Touch: rubbing a texture, fidgeting, seeking deep pressure.
  • Visual: watching moving or repeating patterns, lights, flowing things.

Some stims express joy — the happy flap when something is wonderful is one of the most honest gestures a body can make. Some manage distress. Most just quietly keep the system in range. None of it is random, and almost none of it needs fixing.

Why “quiet hands” was bad advice

A lot of neurodivergent adults grew up being told to stop — sit still, quiet hands, don’t fidget, stop making that noise. The message was that stimming is embarrassing, disruptive, or something to grow out of. So many people learned to suppress it, especially in public. That suppression has a name in the masking conversation, and it has a cost.

Because when you spend energy holding a stim in, that energy comes from somewhere. Suppressing your body’s regulation tool means losing the regulation and spending effort on the suppression — a double tax that drains capacity and, over time, feeds straight into burnout. The stim wasn’t the problem. Being told to stop it was.

There’s a genuine line worth naming: a small number of stims can cause actual harm — the ones that break skin or risk injury. Those are worth gently redirecting toward a safer input that meets the same need. But that’s a tiny slice. The overwhelming majority of stimming is harmless, helpful, and nobody’s business to police.

Stimming freely (and on purpose)

The goal isn’t to stim less. For most people it’s to stim more freely — to stop spending energy hiding a thing that’s actively helping you.

That can look like giving yourself explicit permission to stim at home, unmasked, however your body wants to. It can look like keeping discreet options — a quiet fidget, a chewable, a lap pad — for settings where a bigger stim isn’t practical, so you’re swapping the form without losing the function. It can look like noticing what each stim does for you, so you can reach for the regulating one on purpose when you feel yourself sliding out of range. And it can look, quietly and over time, like unlearning the flinch that says someone’s watching.

The reframe here is simple and worth holding onto: stimming is not a habit to break. It’s your nervous system doing exactly what it’s supposed to do, in the language it actually speaks. You were never meant to have still hands. You were meant to be regulated — and this is one of the main ways your body gets there.
